Whether it’s alcohol, gambling, prescription drugs, illicit substances, or something else; addiction has far reaching implications for individuals, their families and communities, and society. Views and responses to addiction are changing dramatically, thanks in part to science. Scientific studies have revolutionized our understanding of addiction, helping us identify many of the biological and environmental risk factors that contribute to the development and progression of addiction, and informing the development of effective prevention and treatment approaches.
